A 16-minute-long short film, Chutney, marks the entry of talented actress Tisca Chopra in the dynamic stratosphere of Indian short films. Chopra is not only the actor and the producer of the film, but has also co-written the story with director Jyoti Kapur Das. Das has been a part of incredible films like Margarita with a Straw, Queen, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Special 26, Kahaani, and many more.
Set in the middle-class locality of model town, Chutney is a twisted tale of wit and weight. The dowdy housewife – played by Chopra – realises that her husband (Adil Hussain) is having an extra marital affair with another housewife (played by Rasika Duggal). But instead of creating a scene she uses her wit to warn the other women without ever openly threatening her. She sews a macabre tale that does its magic.
The story binds the actors in a beautiful chutney. Although the acting is splendid, the short film lacks a good climax. The film leaves the audience in a lurch, and somewhere the abrupt ending doesn’t quiet fit. Having said that, the short film is definitely worth a watch. It is a good blend with the perfect dose of spices and texture.
